Moulton School

Year 2

Welcome to Year 2!

Mrs Clayton and myself (Miss Hickson) would like to welcome you to our class page.

Here you will find some useful information about Year 2.

Communication

To keep updated with what your child is doing in school, make sure that you join Class Dojo. It is a fantastic tool which allows you to keep track of your child's behaviour as well as what they have been learning each day. Each day, I will communicate through our Class Story what the children have been learning about. You will also be able to see how many Class Dojo points your child receives each day. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me through the private messaging service that Class Dojo provides.

Reading

In Year 2, it is extremely important that your child reads regularly at home. Children must be read with by an adult at home at least 3 times a week. Dojo points will be awarded for children who read regularly at home. Recording when your child reads at home will be different this year as the children will no longer have a reading diary. Please record when your child reads at home via Dojo Portfolio. Please aim to add 3 entries each week. These entries do not have to be lengthy!

It is also vital that children understand the book they are reading so please ask your child questions about the text and encourage them to answer questions carefully using the text to help them. This skill will also be practised in weekly Guided Reading sessions in school, which your child will participate in.

Children will be given 1 reading book to take home on a Wednesday. This must be returned on the following Wednesday so that they can swap it for a new book. If the book is not returned on Wednesday, they will not be able to take a new one home.

If your child has completed their reading book before Wednesday, please make sure that they have done lots of comprehension work around the book. Children are then encouraged to read other books that they may have at home.

Oxford Owl is a great website which has lots of eBooks for children to read.

English

Each half term, your child will be studying a high quality text. Within their English lessons, they will develop their understanding of grammar, punctuation and spelling.  You can keep up to date with our learning on the Class Dojo page.

Spelling

When the children have fully settled back into school life, they will be given spellings to learn as part of their weekly homework. More information will be given nearer the time.

Maths

You can also keep up to date with our Maths learning on the Class Dojo page. Your child may sometimes be given activities to complete through Active Learn which will help them to practise key skills taught in the week.

PE

PE will take place on Wednesday morning with Mrs Sharples. On this day, please send your child into school wearing their normal school polo shirt and school sweatshirt with jogging bottoms and trainers. Please do not send children into school wearing shoes/trainers with laces if they cannot tie them themselves.

Topic

Each term, the children will be learning about different topics. Here are the Year 2 topics for this academic year:

Autumn: How have people like Rosa Parks helped to make the world a better place?

Spring: What do we know about the Victorians and the way they lived?

Summer: Where would you prefer to live: England or Kenya?
