Moulton School

Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

Mrs Deacon, Miss Ingham, Miss Powell and Miss Davies would like to welcome you to our class page.

Here you will find some useful information about Year 1.

Communication

To keep updated with what your child is doing in school make sure that you join Class Dojo. It is a fantastic tool which allows you to keep track of your child's behaviour as well as what they have been learning each day. We will communicate through our ‘Class Story’ and you will be able to see how many Class Dojo points your child receives each day. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me through the private messaging service that Class Dojo provides.

Reading

In Year 1, it is extremely important that your child reads regularly at home.

The children will  take part in Guided Reading sessions each week to help develop their fluency and comprehension skills. Their home reading books are changed once the children have read their book with an adult at in school 3 times. In their book bags, the children will have a home reading text which is matched to the text they are sharing with an adult in school. In their book folder you will find their home reading book and a paper reading record. You can tick the reading record sheet each time they read.

To support your child's love of reading, we also encourage free choice texts from the school library. These will not always match you child's reading level so where this is the case you are invited to share the books and the joy of reading with the children. You are also welcome to share other texts at home. The following websites are really helpful for finding books aimed at your child's age and interests:

Phonics and spellings

Phonics is taught through our Read Write Inc. scheme. The children will be allocated reading books that match their phonics stage which will be shared during Guided Reading and at home.

Spelling is taught throughout the week and children will be grouped to ensure their spellings match their phonics reading level. Children will be taught a spelling pattern each week and will practise spellings using this rule throughout the week in our daily practise.

English

Each half term, your child will be studying a high quality text as part of the Pathways to Write scheme. Within their English lessons, they will develop their understanding of grammar, punctuation and spelling. You can keep up to date with our learning on the Class Dojo page.

Maths

Maths is taught using the White Rose scheme. You can also keep up to date with our Maths learning on the Class Dojo page.

 PE

PE will take place every  Thursday. Each Wednesday, the children will take part in outoor learning as part of their Welly Wednesday activities.

For safety, it is important the children do not wear earrings for PE. Where possible, children should come to school with earrings removed. If children have earrings in on a day where we are doing whole class PE, they will be asked to try to remove them. It is therefore important that anyone with earrings needs to be shown how to remove them safely before wearing them to school.

Continuous Provision and Treasure Tasks

To support Year 1's learning and help with their transition from Reception, Continuous Provision is available throughout the week. Children will be working on key objectives with an adult in small groups while the rest of the class access the Continuous Provision that has been set up for the children to explore independently.

To encourage children and reward their independence, there will be three 'Treasure Tasks' to work towards completing during the day. Usually these will have one writing focus, one numeracy focus and one focus from another curriculum area. The children will be awarded dojo points for each Treasure Task completed.

Homework activities

At Moulton we understand how precious time together at home is as well as how important it is that the children are given time to rest. Therefore, in terms of homework, we only ask that children read as regularly as possible. With that said, we also understand that when you are able to, you love to share the learning that children are taking part in within their classroom. We have decided to offer a set of homework activity ideas which link to classroom learning and can be shared in school. Please note that this list of homework activities is completely optional and is intended only to enrich the learning already taking place in class. Each half term, a new avtivity list will be shared via our Year 1 dojo page.
